Happy Halloween!

With the nomination of Judge Alito, we've gotten our treat!

Here is my weekly column -- a piece about Halloween titled, "The 'New' Halloween: What Does It Say About America?" Check it out.

Yes its definitely a spooky Halloween.

We got the trick but as for the treat - I'm afraid Thug Judge Scalito is going to snatch my candy bag full of civil rights.

I wish Halloween was as untouched by political agendas as you say, but at my son's school, they decided to get rid of any trace of Halloween celebrations (no class party, no costume parade) in order to be sensitive to the beliefs of all their students. I find it a little sad.

Good column, Carol. I know of a school that's gone the other way from what jcgb said: there, students in one class get extra credit for bringing a costume to school. The tricky part is that they can't *wear* it to school.

Doesn't make any sense to me, either.

As to what the "new" Halloween says about America, I'd venture two things: 1) The Irish have succeeded so much that people have forgotten that this used to be an ethnic holiday for them; 2) We are, as Neil Postman wrote in a book about TV some 20 years ago, "amusing ourselves to death."
