Get to Work, Senate!

The House approved a five-week extension of the Patriot Act. Not enough to get the job done, but enough to go home for Christmas without leaving America totally unprotected.

We'll be keeping our eyes on them through February 3.

"For, as the government surely must understand, although the various facts it has asserted are not necessarily inconsistent or without basis, its actions have left not only the impression that Padilla may have been held for these years, even if justifiably, by mistake –- an impression we would have thought the government could ill afford to leave extant. They have left the impression that the government may even have come to the belief that the principle in reliance upon which it has detained Padilla for this time, that the President possesses the authority to detain enemy combatants who enter into this country for the purpose of attacking America and its citizens from within, can, in the end, yield to expediency with little or no cost to its conduct of the war against terror –- an impression we would have thought the government likewise could ill afford to leave extant."--Judge Michael Luttig speaking for the Fourth Circuit

Nothing to do with the PATRIOT Act, per se, just a nice quote, and one worth noting.

On the PATRIOT Act extension--is that the one that just last Friday Bill Frist said the House wouldn't approve and the President wouldn't sign so he wouldn't bring it to the floor? Wasn't that the one that Denny Hastert called irresponsible? Is it the same extension that George W. Bush said he was going to veto?

Flippity-floppity.

I find the Republicans weak-kneed in their leadership of the Congress. I think Power Line said it best:

"It's a funny thing: when the Democrats are in the majority, the Democrats run Congress. When the Republicans are in the majority, the Democrats still run Congress. How does that work?"

Pete, you hit it right on the head. The right wing is far too tolerant of dissent.

Contact your Senator and request--nay, demand--that they stop mollycoddling all those wooly headed liberals. (Make sure you pass on your amusing nicknames for their Democratic Senatorial colleagues, as that will demonstrate you are a serious man who have given this some serious thought.)
