Danny Debase-O

Here is a link to the YouTube video of Danny DeVito's disgraceful performance on "The View."

Interestingly, the clip shows him referring to the President in terms vulgar enough that they were bleeped out by ABC; what it doesn't show (and I saw today in a replay of the show itself) were his remarks about having sex with his wife on every surface in the Lincoln Bedroom.

Discussing the episode on today's Hugh Hewitt show, the incredibly talented James Lileks made a very perceptive remark about DeVito's comments about the Lincoln Bedroom -- to the effect that DeVito was the type of person who couldn't bear to leave anything undebased. Absolutely true.

But in my view, people like Danny DeVito have always been with us. And once upon a time, he would have been treated like the boor that he is, rather than having Rosie and the rest of the "View" gang giggling along sympathetically. Perhaps part of the problem is that too few people are willing to take a stand about a lot of the vulgarity with which Americans are confronted on a daily basis.

Barbara Walters, the show's true and undisputed leader, is a very smart lady. She could have chosen some classy but firm way to slap down DeVito -- and it would have been courageous and right for her to have done so. It would have demonstrated for all those women in the audience that -- while everyone is entitled to his or her opinion -- those views should be expressed with a modicum of decorum when one discusses the President and The White House on national television. What a wasted opportunity.

Just recently, Barbara Walters ran an interesting special about her 30 biggest mistakes in 30 years; it seemed admirable to me that she would be willing to critique herself so thoroughly. It's worth wondering whether she believes letting DeVito's rant go unreproved was a mistake, as well.

While such displays seem to be lauded by certain lefty elements, it is the target that determines their revulsion or accolades. Somehow I doubt that they'd give the same response if DeVito was speaking that way of the Clinton White House.

Hello - first time commenter here.

I believe in free speech, so the whole Danny DeVito not agreeing with the president/not liking him/etc.

However, I'm like you...he didn't need to use the words he used, and he was pretty darned loopy.

But why is OK with Rosie O'D? If she's the crusader for family values she makes herself out to be, she hasn't acted like it. She wants Britney & sons to live with her family, BUT doesn't realize that condoning out of control behavior like Danny DeVito's is just adding fuel to the fire?

I'm really hoping they fire Rosie soon. I'm sick of her overshadowing the others.

Entertainers live in an incestuous world where they will not criticize each other for fear of being ostracized. We already know that liberals don't care about decorum or manners. It's been their goal to undermine society. The women's tolerating Devito's drunk behavior on a nationally broadcasted just proves that they will tolerate a cursing drunk lib spouting of lies than a coherent fact speaking Conservative.

Carol, I couldn't agree more that Walters missed an opportunity to bring daytime TV out of the gutter it has been in for many years. As one who reveres the stay at home mom (my wife is one) I know that many get company from having the tube on thru the day....the View, Oprah and much of the what keeps these hero moms company is sadly tasteless and misguided.

What his performance shows is that there are a majority of people out there who by virtue of their position, profession, political ideology or money feel they have a right to show their lack of intellect, class or understanding of the realities in our culture.

Is Danny, or the View participants and the audience any different than Paris Hilton or Britney Spears showing off their "privates" in a deliberate fashion? No, I don't think so. Danny showed us his and it is a poor example of normal.

True indeed. But it was no mistake. Had she done what you suggested, she would not continue to get the celebrity interviews that are her stock in trade. Then we might never know what tree Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton or Scarlett Johannsen would be if they were trees. [Is there a skanky tree?]

Just note that Elisabeth Hasselbeck wasn't putting up with the nonsense. It's just that she couldn't get a word in edgewise with the other clucking hens going on and on with their giggling.

First of all, women aren't "clucking hens" -- even when they're acting like Rosie O'Donnell.

Second, whatever Elizabeth Hasselbeck thinks or doesn't think (or feels or doesn't feel), she is regularly intimidated and routinely bested by other women on the panel. That's not to blame her -- it's just to say that it's not easy to be the only conservative and the youngest and the least experience and the best looking person on the panel.

Third, even so, my experience has been that when someone wants to telegraph disapproval, she can find a way to do it. When I saw cutaway shots to Elizabeth Hasselbeck, she didn't seem inordinately annoyed, but that's a judgment that each viewer has to make for himself.

Carol,

Don't take offense. Some women ARE clucking hens. You should've heard my aunts at the family reunions. Loved every one of them, but when they all got together, "Cluck cluck giggle giggle cluck"

The only time I watch that garbage is when the person on the crosstrainer next to me has gotten there before me and is watching it. I wonder why they say Danny was drunk? Isn't that the way all liberals act and talk? Is Rosie drunk every day? Was Alex Baldwin drunk when he was ranting & raving a few days ago? If you have nothing between your ears but crap, that's what comes out. Barbara should hang it up. She's been done for years. Stick a fork in her.

I did a post which includes excerpts from David Kupelian's excellent article in Whistleblower magazine (Why Hollywood is Insane) and it demonstrates why celebrities like DeVito (especially drunken ones) act the way they do.

Why Celebrities Have Conflict Ridden Lives

Sorry Carol but some women are "clucking hens" , especially the ones on the View and their incessantly void audience. If that doesn't correctly describe what's going on, I don't know what does. And so that you don't think it's a rip of females, men (mostly of the metrosexual flavor) can be "clucking roosters" as well.

And just because Hasselbeck isn't look inordinately pissed off enough for you doesn't mean she approves. You blow away your own argument when you explain that she's outnumbered 3:1 and especially so when you then add in the audience. Duh! What do you expect her to do, drop some Shakespeare like prose that will somehow get through to them?

I guess you're one of the perfect conservative women who would do exactly the right thing in the same situation. Funny though, my wife was one of the few conservatives in her Law School and she found it very difficult at times to deal with, being outnumbered significantly. Maybe I should refer her to your many books and articles which explain the correct way in dealing with that situation.

But leave it to a conservative to piss off another conservative. I 'll stick with Hugh though....
