Carol Platt Liebau: A "Public Service" Academy?

A "Public Service" Academy?

Here is one of the worst ideas I've heard in a long time. Hillary Clinton wants to establish a national public service academy on par with the military service academies to train government bureaucrats.

Sure, France has something like that. But here in America, we aren't about worshipping big government and the bureaucracies they bring with them (except, of course, for a few notable liberal presidential candidates). We have the finest higher education system in the world, and people who are going to go work in the government don't need some big new academy to teach them how to do it.

What young men and women learn in the military academies is specialized knowledge. There's no doubt that government service of any kind can be honorable, but it's laughable to think that everything from an inspector general to a prosecutor to a bureaucrat at Health and Human Services to a government secretary requires -- or merits -- some sort of specialized training.

Just one more great idea Hillary has for using your tax money, folks.

But they need to be taught to follow the correct procedure. Government is good. The individual is bad. Big Sister HC like her predecessor in "1984" wants us to believe only the "real truth".

Hillary Clinton wants to establish a public service college - obviously as another step towards turning America into a Nazi state.

There's a perverse sort of logic operating here Flom and Stackja - if you can't argue properly then label your opponents as Nazis or invoke Orwell.

Flom - you need to read about Godwin's Law.

OK, OSO - good point. It was a cheap shot.

However there is a valid concern. I have previously labeled Ms. C as a Communist. Her words about redistribution of wealth and her avowed socialist leanings confirm that. MAy I remind you of what Marx said: From each according to his ability to each according to his need. That echoes her remarks in California recently.

Sp I'll say it again. Hillary Clinton is an intellectual Communist.

And as to Godwin's law - Tell me, where does he get his data?

Dear Over-the-Hill Gang,

You are showing your age with these commie pinko/nazi comments. We already know you will only vote for stupid greedy white guys who are hell bent on destroying the world for a buck. You all bought into the "Chairman of the Board" Sinatra mantra, that he who has the most toys at his time of death, wins. But the fact remains that none of you will take one cent with you, as you depart this world.

There seems to be some confusion about the nature of this proposed academy. It's hard to tell from such a brief sketch, but what she describes isn't at all like the French Ecole. That institute is very elitist and is meant to train the very top-level leaders of the French government. What Ms. Clinton is proposing seems to me to be more of a public-service school, training people to be bureaucrats, not politicians.

As to the need for such training, I think that some of the screwups we have seen in the last few years (e.g., Katrina, Iraqi contracts) demonstrate that our government bureaucrats would benefit from some sort of training, at least at the higher levels.

A good friend of mine just retired as a Pentagon civilian employee. She was pretty high in the organization, high enough to present testimony to Congressional committees. Her special expertise lay in how to get things done financially, and apparently this expertise was golden. It seems to me that the uniqueness of the US government -- the largest bureaucracy in the world -- requires some sort of introductory coursework.

To put it simply, which would you rather have running our government: total beginners or people with some training?

Lastly, the suggestions that this is somehow fascist are silly.

Wow ETC - your anger is awesome.

What economic system do you favor? Socialism doesn't work, Obviously you don't like the free market? Hmmmm What's left? Seriously?

If I earn it, I will spend it as I see fit. I don't want your money, I'm happy with my own.

When I die, if my last check bounces - My life has been a success!
Also - remember - The nazi government was National Socialism - the government allowed free enterprise, but had their finger in every pie. It was still socialism.

Oh, I was just having fun. My experience with government workers is that they really don't work and are on a form of welfare. They show up, they get paid. And I can't judge what Hillary suggests here until she lays out some details.

Thank you, Chepe, for pointing out the obvious: we all rely on public institutions (no matter how poorly they are run), so it behooves us to have good people running them.

I understand that many of you mistrust Sen. Clinton and her motives, but I urge you to give the Public Service Academy a serious look. This idea extends far beyond her or her campaign -- our movement has attracted the support of the last three superintendents of West Point and a host of conservatives and liberals alike. The military, in fact, is probably our strongest base of support, perhaps because military veterans recognize the importance of leadership development.

A public service academy will ensure that government positions are filled with people who sing the same tune on population control and the plethora of bizarre policies through which it is implemented, social and so-called "scientific" darwinism, Keynesian economics, "globalism," etc. Otherwise, there would really be no need for a "National Public Service Academy." I have written more about this on my website at www.petersnewyork.com.

Say hello to the "Hillary Youth" program.

Just what we need. More government control over the young people of our country. As if federally funded "public" schools were not enough.
